[CONFLICT]
Conflict is an expressed struggle between two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from the other party in achieving their goals. It is defined when:
- Both parties are aware of the disagreement.
- The parties are usually dependent on each other.
- At least one party assumes one's gain will be another's loss.
- People assume there isn't enough of something to meet demand.
- At least one of the parties is prevented from reaching their goals.
In many instances, people try to solve conflicts using a variety of different methods with different outcomes. There is competing (win-lose), where the person refuses to compromise. A person can resort to collaborating (win-win) in order to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. Avoiding (lose-lose) is a tactic used to ignore the problem and not reach a solution altogether. A person can sacrifice their own desires in a method known as accommodating (lose-win). Lastly, two people can end up compromising (partial lose-lose/win-win), or deciding on an outcome that is partially beneficial to each.
Unfortunately, there are no conflicts that are easily solved in Spec Ops: The Line. In some games, the player has the option to choose whether or not to be good or evil, altruistic or selfish when faced with certain decisions and gain some sort of profit from their action. Nobody wins when you make a decision in Spec Ops. Every choice you make ends up hurting someone, or a lot of someones. There are no correct answers and making the right decision doesn't really exist. In many instances, these decisions frequently end up furthering existing conflicts or establishing new ones. The clip below shows a scene from the game where one of your comrades is brutally murdered. The irony is that those people are the ones you have been trying to rescue throughout the course of the game. The player is given the decision on how to deal with the locals, whether you show restraint or take revenge. You can see in the video that there is neither winning nor avoidance, yet it's a situation where both parties are destined to lose. If you were placed in a similar situation, what would you do? Spec Ops shows that not every conflict can be solved easily and that there are situations where one cannot rely on the five standard problem-solving tactics: competing, collaborating, avoiding, accommodating, and compromising.
